How to calculate the budget of your Interiors?

How to decide the Budget for Interiors of your Home?

Looking for revamping your house? Here’s the awkward but most important ingredient part that nobody talks about: The Budget! which can be monetary as well as for the time. A well planned Budget can be very helpful in achieving the desired vision for your space and create a beautiful experience without giving nightmares.

COVID has had a deep impact on the interior design industry. The demands have modified as per the current scenario and designers are adapting accordingly. There is an increase in the number of people wanting to revamp their homes. This is great, however, there also seems to be a downside to it.

Most of the home interiors enquiries do not move past the initial stage of free consultation because of an inadequate interior design budget. Some enquiries do not even reach the free consultation stage because of disproportionate demands compared to their given budget.

Clearly, there is a need to understand the importance of budgeting in interior design and how to manage it. Let’s discuss some of the crucial points when it comes to budgeting!

Buying Everything At Once

The initial shock comes from the idea of purchasing everything needed for designing your home at once. Usually, people tend to buy furniture, décor items, accessories, etc. for their homes in stages. From a new TV and Sound System to brand new curtains. All of it is purchased over a course of time. That is why their costs do not pinch as much.

But when you are hiring an interior designer, you will get all these things in one hit. So the amount adds up! It seems like a huge amount when you put it all together and comes as a shock to people.

The truth, however, is that a designer conceptualizes the entire space available and gets all the products suitable for your style and home design at once. This spares you from the stress of making adequate purchase decisions as well as running around from store to store looking for a particular item.

A well-designed room requires you to spend a decent amount of money. A designer knows to spend that money well without regrets of making purchase mistakes. They know how to manage a budget to accommodate all the requirements of the clients and not exceed it.

What Is Needed To Furnish A Room?

Let’s take a Living Room, the list can go on and on because it depends on customers like what they want to keep in essentials bucket and what under optional. For example:

Sofa set, rug, Coffee table, Armchair, Side table, Entertainment unit, Floor lamp, Wall décor, Cushions, Table Décor etc.

Keep in mind that the above list does not include paint, curtains, window treatments, installing lighting, or anything else that a client may want. When you calculate the cost of all of this together, the amount adds up quickly.

How an Initial Budget can help?

Consider your designer as a professional whom you can trust. Ask multiple “why” before you hire them to gain that trust and later keep that trust along. Designers are talented professionals but they are also dependent upon manufactures and suppliers. (Choose Your Designer)
They are skilled at managing a given budget. However, a discussion about budget is imminent before the commencement of the project at hand. It is best for all parties considered to be armed with all the information.

Budgeting isn’t there to rip you off. A designer can manage within a competitive budget and give the suggestions that fits in. Market has various options fitting under different quality and budget criteria.

It is always suggested to create balance between quality, budget and timelines when planning the budget for the interiors.

Designers have their own contacts and suppliers that can give them good discounts. However, every supplier has a different trade discount and not every designer may want to pass on discounts to the client.

You don’t need huge money but you do need a budget.

What To Consider In Advance

  • Before getting in touch with an interior designer, create a wish list. Then, as per your wish list, establish a fixed budget you are able to afford and are comfortable with.
  • Any additions or omissions from the budget list must be forwarded to the designer in advance.
  • Create a separate fixed budget list for needs vs. wants. The Needs list include the essentials needed for the proper functioning of any given room like lighting. The Wants list includes accessories to make the interiors “feel” finished like wall décor. This distinction may prove necessary should you deplete your budget as well as its cushion.

Pro Tip: You may not know the cost of each item required but you do know how much you are willing to spend on a particular item.

Interior Designing Fees

Interior designers usually apply one of the three fee structures. It is important to know these fees structures to help create a budget.

  • Flat rate (or fixed)
  • Hourly rate
  • Square foot/square meter

Another not so common fee structure is “Percentage-based, (also known as cost plus)”. This traditional fee structure is quite popular in the luxury home interiors.

Additionally, there may be charges such as retainers and design consultation fees.

How To Develop An Interior Design Budget

Developing a budget for your interiors is not an easy task. A lot goes into each one, from products to labor to shipping to taxes and beyond…

However, a well thought-out budget is critical for achieving successful design results.

Listed below are some vital points to consider to give you some clarity and a good foundation for creating a budget

Create A Design Concept: An interior design project starts with your vision for a given space. Gather some inspirational images. Make a list of things you want. You’d be surprised how the estimated cost of all these items add up. This is important and should be factored into the budget.

Develop A Detailed Space Plan: It helps in determining how many pieces of furniture, décor items or accessories are needed in the space. Take in all the details thoroughly and budget accordingly. Is this a large or small space? DO you need a small or big rug? Type of lighting? All this needs to be added to the list.

The Quality You Want: Consider the quality and durability of the products you want in your home. Do you have any special requirements? Do you have any kids or pets? Type of furniture? Specialty fabrics are all available at a premium cost.

Detailed List Of Products You Want And What You Need: Prepare a detailed product list in Excel or on a paper. Make columns for Good, Better, Best (or Low, Mid, High). This largely impacts budget! Designers will add price points for each of the items listed. Or you can Google to find product prices.

Add Each Price Column: When you add up each of the price columns, you’ll quickly find out the subtotal which is the bare minimum you need to execute your vision.

Additional Costs: This includes Tax, Shipping or freight costs, Installation charges, Accessories, Built-Ins or millwork needed and if working through a design firm, there maybe a receiving warehouse and delivery fee.

Conclusion

Budgeting is important to carry out a successful interior design project. If you are on a tight budget, try limiting your scope. Do a single area first instead of doing everything at once. If the budget you have isn’t enough for the quality you’d like, then design the essential room first and save for the other to be done later.
